Thunder Waive Tyler Davis, Will Sign Donte Grantham to Two-Way Contract

Per Brett Dawson of The Athletic, the Thunder have waived two-way player Tyler Davis. To fill the now-vacant two-way roster spot, the Thunder are signing Donte Grantham — a 6-8 rookie forward that has averaged 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in nine appearances for the Oklahoma City Blue this season.

A 6-10 rookie center out of Texas A&M, Davis occupied one of the two two-way contracts available to the Thunder (along with Deonte Burton), but made just one appearance on the main roster — logging one rebound in one minute of action against the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 27. He averaged 17.2 points and 11.6 rebounds with the Blue, but his path toward contributing in the NBA was firmly blocked by the presence of Steven Adams and Nerlens Noel.

Grantham attended training camp with the Thunder and has been with the Blue so far this season. He’s averaged 10.7 PPG in nine G-League appearances, shooting 40 percent on nearly six three-point attempts per game. With Patrick Patterson struggling as Jerami Grant’s backup at the 4-spot, seeking help at the biggest position of need makes sense for GM Sam Presti. Whether or not Grantham gets much of an opportunity at the NBA level is yet to be seen — though it’s entirely possible after Abdel Nader spent some time at power forward in the Christmas Day loss in Houston.

Grantham’s best game in the G-League came on December 14 against the Memphis Hustle. He shot 9-of-17 (6-of-9 3P), scoring 25 points in 33 minutes of action in the Blue’s 119-111 victory. You can check out his highlights from that game below.
