Is Aaron Wiggins OKC’s next hidden gem?
While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort, and Josh Giddey will generate most of the attention, (and deservedly so), an interesting OKC storyline to watch this year is the development of Aaron Wiggins, the 55th Pick from the 2021 Draft.
After a productive Summer League and Preseason, Wiggins appears poised to potentially become the Thunder’s next two-way contract success story. Since the two-way Contract was introduced to the NBA, OKC has fully utilized the additional roster spots.
Deonte Burton, Moses Brown and Dort all earned converted contracts after displaying hard work and positive signs of growth. Among the three, Dort is obviously the headliner, as he has already become one of the premier defenders in this League and has taken sizable steps in developing his offensive game as well.
During Summer League and Preseason, Wiggins demonstrated that he is a quality fit inside the Thunder’s team identity on both sides of the court.
Possessing a silky-smooth offensive game, fluid footwork, high motor, and great defensive instincts, Wiggins has made quite an impression. Coach Daigneault has praised Wiggins, and pointed out that he has a lot of supporters inside the organization.
While Wiggins will likely spend some developmental time with the Blue this year, don’t be surprised if he’s carved himself a rotation spot by the end of the year with the Thunder squad.
This year for OKC is all about development and exploring the roster, so at some point, Wiggins will likely be given an opportunity. He’s a person of high character, works extremely hard, and clearly wants to succeed, which will only help him in his quest to make the full-time roster.
Wiggins will have a chance to make his NBA debut on Wednesday night vs the Utah Jazz at 8 p.m. CT.
